GIS Day at DHSS: GIS Unit holds 3rd Annual DHSS GIS Day Open House
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services' GIS unit held its 3rd Annual GIS Day Open House on November 16, 2005. The activities were held as part of the larger International GIS Day activities sponsored by The National Geographic Society, Association of American Geographers, University Consortium for Geographic Information Science, Library of Congress, and Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI). The open house provided an opportunity to promote GIS technology at DHSS, display GIS projects, and meet the GIS staff. A hands-on area was available where participants could use GIS software to do things like display a table of address data or create buffers. Missouri Deparment of Health and Senior Services Partner with Missouri 4-H to Develop Cooperative GIS/GPS Projects
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is working with the University of Missouri Extension Service to develop cooperative GIS/GPS projects for the Missouri 4-H Tech Team. The effort is part of a nation-wide initiative to involve youth in the fast-growing field of geospatial technology. Through the National 4-H GIS - GPS Technology Program, 4-H members work closely with partnering entities to undertake projects that give them real-world experience in using the technology, while providing valuable data and finished products to the partners. Enhancing Missouri's Local Government Geospatial Capabilities
In cooperation with the projects partners [U.S. Geological Survey (USGS); Missouri Association of Councils of Government (MACOG); Missouri State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA); Missouri GIS Advisory Committee (MGISAC) and Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI)] - the Missouri Spatial Data Information Service (MSDIS) and Geographical Research Center (GRC) will provide advanced GIS training at no cost to cooperating local government staff members. These entities will be contributing to an eventually state-wide critical infrastructure data layer for use in The National Map and other homeland security / emergency response applications. [More...]
Operation Blue Ribbon: Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Simulates E coli Outbreak in Emergency Response GIS Field Exercise
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) sponsored an emergency response exercise geared specifically towards GIS. "Operation Blue Ribbon" simulated an E. coli outbreak at the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia, Missouri. The primary purpose of the exercise was to develop and improve the technical skills of GIS users for Local Public Health Agencies (LPHA). The exercise also tested the emergency functions for GIS professionals at DHSS in their mobile command center. [More...]
State and Local Collaboration: Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services provides GPS receivers and training to Local Public Health Agency Staff
In fall of 2005, staff from eighteen Local Public Health Agencies (LPHA) received Garmin V GPS receivers as part of a joint effort between the Geographic Health Emergency Response Mapping (GHERM) program and the new Local Environmental Public Health Initiative.
